Farm workers cooperate to start their own operation Retrenched group receive shot in arm from eThekwini GCIS-Vukuzenzele > By GCIS-Vukuzenzele - 25 May 2021 - 08:05 Farmworkers at the Cato Ridge Chicken Farm with eThekwini Municipality Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda. Image: Vukuzenzele
Retrenched poultry farm workers in KwaZulu-Natal have formed a poultry cooperative after finding themselves without any means to make a living following the closure of farms they worked on.
The Cato Ridge Chicken Farm in Hammarsdale has inspired many farmworkers to use the skills they learnt when they were employed to start their own business.
The workers were left jobless in 2017 when RCL Foods, which owns Rainbow Chickens, sold 15 of its 25 farms. This resulted in a loss of 1,350 jobs. Of these workers, 129 formed Isukile Agricultural Cooperative, which started operating in December 2020.

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South African food producer RCL Foods on Monday reported a 12% increase in half-year profit, boosted by the performances of its sugar, baking and logistics segments.
RCL, which owns Selati sugar, Ouma rusks and Rainbow Chickens brands, reported headline earnings per share of 59.7 cents for the six months ended Dec. 31 from 53.3 cents last year.
Revenue during the reported period rose 10.5% to 15.7 billion rand ($1.05 billion), driven by higher volumes and improved pricing in its sugar and baking products, upbeat milling volumes and strong performances in its Vector Logistics business.
“With COVID-19 mitigation strategies firmly in place, including careful management of working capital, RCL FOODS has been able to focus on its strategic transformation agenda with the aim of creating a more resilient business with more sustainable quality of earnings,” said Chief Executive Officer Miles Dally.

Quantum leap in poultry sector
THE local poultry sector has seen an eventful 2020 and – judging by a recently announced large acquisition by Quantum Foods – could be in for even more intrigue in the year ahead.
The big shake-up last year came with a tussle for control of Wellington-based Quantum Foods – which aside from producing chickens also dabbles in eggs and animal feeds.
Just to refresh memories, Stellenbosch-based agribusiness Zeder Investments sold its 30% shareholding in Quantum to larger poultry rival Country Bird Holdings (CBH).
CBH contemplated making an offer to take over all of Quantum, but this move seemed to ruffle a few feathers in the poultry sector. SA’s largest poultry producer Astral Foods – which has a long standing and strategic supply agreement for birds with Quantum – seemed most perturbed.
