The Pacers held another round of pre-draft workouts Tuesday with just nine days to go before the NBA draft.
This group of Pacers prospects included Marcus Garrett, A.J. Lawson, John Petty Jr., Yves Pons, Aamir Simms, and D.J. Stewart Jr. The Pacers currently have three picks for next Thursday’s draft, numbers 13, 54 and 60. Most in this group are projected as second-round picks.
Garrett and Lawson headlined the workout at the Ascension St. Vincent practice facility.
A.J. Lawson is a 6-foot-6 shooting guard out of South Carolina by way of Ontario, Canada. He has paced the Gamecocks in scoring over the past two seasons. He averaged 16.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.5 steals per game this past year as a junior on his way to second team All-SEC honors. Now, after initially declaring for the 2019 and 2020 drafts, Lawson is ready to give the NBA his best shot.
HIGHLAND In a Utah state amateur tournament known as much for comebacks and rallies as birdies and eagles, the final followed suit.
Eighteen holes haven t been enough to settle the championship match between University of Utah teammates for the second straight year, which is why the Utah Golf Association has moved toward a 36-hole final.
But not even 36 holes could separate Martin Leon and Blake Tomlinson, who was back in the championship match for the second straight season.
Nor could 37 or 38 holes.
On the 39th green, Leon finally broke through.
With his father by his side the whole way, the Chilean-born freshman held off a rally from his college team s No. 1 golfer to upset Tomlinson, 1 up in 39 holes Saturday afternoon at Alpine Country Club to clinch Leon s first U.S. tournament title of his career.
HIGHLAND Thousands of miles away from home, Martin Leon s run in the 123rd Utah State Amateur championship nearly ended when it had scarcely began.
The University of Utah redshirt freshman from Santiago, Chile, was one of the last golfers to advance to the 64-man match-play bracket of the tournament, and he even had to battle a 16-man playoff for the final 11 spots just to earn a spot opposite second-seeded Elijah Turner.
But a funny thing happened to Martin since that moment. First, he beat Turner, the BYU sophomore who prepped at Lone Peak, 5 and 3 in his first match.
Then he kept winning through playoffs and comeback bids, all the way up to the final, where he ll face Utah teammate Blake Tomlinson in a 36-hole, winner-take-all championship Saturday at 8 a.m. MT at Alpine Country Club.
