US aerospace giant Northrop Grumman is pitching its Sky Viper chain gun for the US Army’s next-generation scout helicopter. The latest weapon is a mini-version of the automatic cannon mounted on the Boeing Apache helicopter, which the US has sold to India.
Last week, the Virginia-headquartered Northrop Grumman announced that it would build a prototype of its Sky Viper, a 20mm chain gun, for the US Army’s Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft (FARA).
The Army is currently evaluating the Sky Viper and another 20mm weapon system, the XM915 Gatling gun, developed by General Dynamics Ordnance, at the Combat Capabilities Development Command’s Armaments Center.

The first of three modified S-70 helicopters will be formally handed over to the Austrian Air Force on 15 March.
The Austrian Air Force is about to receive the first of three modified Sikorsky S-70 Black Hawk helicopters.
The helicopters were bought second-hand from Jordan for €60 million in 2020.
Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner will attend a 15 March ceremony at Langenlebarn airbase some 50km northwest of Vienna, the Austrian MoD announced on 12 March.
Procurement of the S-70s began in August 2018, when the Austrian government announced that they would be added to a fleet of nine S-70A42s.
By January 2019, the government had committed funding to buy the three Black Hawks plus 18 light multirole helicopters to replace a fleet of 21 ageing Aerospatiale Alouette IIIs.

The U.S. Army will test two new gun designs for its upcoming armed scout helicopter.
One of the guns is a scaled-down version of the gun used on the Apache helicopter, while the other a more traditional Gatling gun.
The winning gun will go on to arm hundreds of new helicopters set to enter service in the 2030s.
Northrop Grumman is building the first example of what it hopes will arm the U.S. Army’s next-generation scout helicopter. The company will pit its new Sky Viper chain gun against a Gatling gun from General Dynamics.
