Wellington City Council being sued $100m for irreparably damaged quake building

Wellington City Council is being sued by the Bank of New Zealand for more than $100 million over a waterfront building that was irreparably damaged in the 2016 Kaikōura quake. The building on Waterloo Quay which was known as the BNZ Harbour Quays has since been demolished. Photo: RNZ / Phil Pennington The building, which has since been demolished, was purpose-built for the bank, which leased it from its owner, CentrePort. BNZ alleges the council should not have granted building consents and code of compliance certificates for the building, which had significant design defects. The council s chief executive, Barbara McKerrow, said the council does not believe it has any liability.
