Cull ewe trade slightly easier at Waterford Ross Mart on Monday

April 21, 2021 6:10 am Richard Kirwan, the mart manager of Waterford Ross Mart, reported a steady, but strong trade for spring lambs and hoggets at Monday’s (April 19) weekly sheep sale – although the cull ewe trade was slightly easier. Spring lamb prices topped €181/head for 50kg, while hogget prices reached a high of €188/head. Richard said there was no slip in prices for hoggets or spring lambs, despite factories talking back prices. However, he noted a slightly easier trade for cull ewes, with prices back about €3-5/head in places. Speaking to Agriland after the conclusion of the sale, Richard said: “The spring lamb and hogget trade was steady, but still very strong, with prices similar to what we saw last week.

Prices for heifers peak at €2,770 in Waterford Ross Mart

April 8, 2021, 6:00 am There was a strong demand for forward beef cattle it seems at Waterford Ross Mart last Saturday (April 3). During a special show and sale, factory agents, farmers and northern customers were reportedly battling it out to get their hands on some of the top lots on offer. Speaking to Agriland this week about the sale, manager Richard Kirwan commented that it was a tremendous day for farmers selling cattle. He said: “It was just great to see farmers being paid a good price for the quality animals that they brought forward on Saturday. Advertisement “The champion heifer that topped the sale at €2,770 or €4.13/kg [for a Limousin heifer weighing 670kg] was the result of a bidding war between two suckler farmers from the west of Ireland and Slaney Meats, Bunclody.”

Calf trade: Bank holiday fever lifts the demand for calves

April 7, 2021, 6:10 am It was a quiet bank holiday weekend for a lot of people, however one thing that did draw attention was the calf trade over recent days. As more people seemed to be free to preview calves at marts, managers noted that it drew more attention and customer demand to sales held in recent days. One of the standout prices paid was at Carnaross Mart calf sale held on Monday (April 5), where a two-month-old Belgian Blue heifer calf (pictured above) sold for a nice price tag of €780. Viewing the prices paid at the Meath-based mart on Monday, the sought-after beef calves were a strong trade overall. Plenty of strong Angus and Hereford calves were fit to pass the €250/head mark.
