Aloha man saves daughter before drowning in whirlpool in White River Falls State Park By Web Staff     WASCO COUNTY, Oregon (KPTV) A 38-year-old father was able to save his daughter but unfortunately drowned while the family was visiting White River Falls State Park over the weekend. According to the Wasco County Sheriff’s Office, Jason Manuel Vantine, of Aloha, went to the park on Saturday with his two daughters. Around 12:20 p.m., the sheriff’s office was called to the park about a man who was struggling in the lower White River Falls outside Tygh Valley. WCSO said witnesses reported Vantine and one of his daughters where in the river when they started to struggle in a whirlpool. Vantine was able to free his daughter from the whirlpool before he went under. A bystander jumped into the river and pulled the girl from the water. The bystander then went back in to pull Vantine out.

An Aloha man drowned in White River, outside of Tygh Valley, on Saturday afternoon, the Wasco County Sheriff s Office (WCSO) reported. Witnesses told deputies that the man went under after saving his daughter from a whirlpool. The victim, 38-year-old Jason Manuel Vantine, of Aloha, was visiting White River Falls State Park with his two children, WCSO said. According to witnesses, Vantine and one of his daughters were swimming in the river when they were caught in a whirlpool and started to struggle.

Sunset Valley Fire burns about 987 acres; barn, outbuildings, multiple vehicles damaged By Web Staff     THE DALLES, Oregon (KPTV) A wildfire near The Dalles damaged several outbuildings and vehicles, and grew to nearly 1,000 acres after it was first reported Thursday afternoon. The Office of State Fire Marshal said the Sunset Valley Fire was first reported around 3:45 p.m. in the 3100 block of Valley View Drive. Strong winds pushed the fire, which was burning in mostly brush and wheat, in a southeast direction. The Wasco County Sheriff’s Office issued Level 3 “Go Now” and Level 2 “Get Set” evacuations for areas near the wildfire. Current evacuation levels can be found on the sheriff’s office’s Facebook page. Parts of Highway 197 were closed Thursday evening, but were back open Friday morning.
