Houston - The University of Texas has announced its marching band will continue to play The Eyes of Texas
Despite demands, the alma mater be permanently retired because it likely originated from a turn of the 20th-century minstrel show which featured racially offensive characters in black face .
In a clunky compromise, UT is forming a second marching band for those students who refuse to play the controversial tune.
The University s decision to retain The Eyes of Texas has drawn fierce protest from those who see it as representative of a racist past - and an equally ferocious defense from alumni who view it as UT heritage with no bigoted or discriminatory intent.

Water bill hike coming?
Houston s Sunday morning political debate show! The WYP panel talks about proposed rate hikes for water and sewage for city residents.
HOUSTON - Citing the need for a safe and reliable water supply Mayor Sylvester Turner announced his support for a substantial rate hike.
How substantial? According to the Houston Chronicle s Jasper Scherer, the city s consultants are recommending a 40% rate increase for water and a whopping 60% for wastewater, with the increases spread out over the next five years.

More than 35,000 Houstonians have reportedly signed a petition calling for a referendum to reduce the power of the city s strong mayor.
Sounds like a slam dunk for Republicans to gain input on the city s Democratic agenda, but District G Councilman Greg Travis calls it a bad idea.
“This is being done by the firefighters. I don t think it s going to what they think it s going to do,” he says. “Meantime, it s going to turn us into a Portland or Seattle. You re going to have all sorts of little stupid things on there (agenda) and the city council meetings are going to be about 12 hours long.”
