Tree dedication honors 102-year-old Eustis resident, master gardener

EUSTIS It s a gift that will keep on giving. To commemorate both Florida and National Arbor Day, the Camellia Garden Club of Eustis on Tuesday presented two Florida Maple trees to the Eustis Memorial Library in honor of their longest club member, Ruth Squire.  At 102 years young, Squire has been an active member in the club for the last 70 years and has become a mentor and beloved friend to many of the members.  “Today we honor Ruth for her work in our community,” Eustis Vice-Mayor Emily Lee said.  Camellia Garden Club was founded in 1948 and Squire was one of the original members. She served as president in 1953-54, 1963-64 and 1986-87. She is also a flower show judge emeritus and a Master Gardener Emeritus. 

Councillor fights to scrap Wallingford Local Plan

A COUNCILLOR who is taking her own council to court over its housing plan used an annual town meeting to share her fears with residents. South Oxfordshire district councillor Sue Roberts raised the alarm about overdevelopment at the Wallingford Town Meeting on Wednesday. Dr Roberts warned that the district council s Local Plan for development would let developers build tens of thousands of homes on green fields. She said: “It is one new house for every two we have now: an astonishing rate of growth. This massively exceeds our expected population growth. Three newly-empty properties will appear for every house that becomes a home.”

Lane Harrison Lane Harrison has been awarded tenure and promoted to associate professor in the Department of Computer Science. Harrison is an expert in visualization and human-computer interaction, teaching courses in data visualization and web development. His research leverages computational methods to understand and shape how people interpret, use, and create visualizations and visual analytics tools. Harrison’s work has led to design guidelines for visualizations in cybersecurity, news, and education. He participates in WPI’s Data Science, Interactive Media and Game Development (IMGD), and Bioinformatics and Computational Biology programs. Harrison joined the faculty in 2015. He earned his BS and PhD at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and he completed postdoctoral work at Tufts University.
