Police said Kyle Lee Ramirez was driving in the area of Second Street and The Toledo around 1:50 a.m. on Monday when he crashed into the bridge guard railing on eastbound Second Street just past Bay Shore Avenue, leaving a roughly 20-foot-long hole in the railing.
No other vehicles were involved in the incident and Ramirez’s car did not end up in the water, but the crash left neighbors talking about the damage.
In a Facebook post, Councilwoman Suzie Price said “a number of residents” asked her about what had happened.
Police said Ramirez suffered minor injuries to the upper torso and was treated at a hospital. Public Works staff put up barricades around the open portion of the bridge while the city works to repair the damage.

Long Beach arson investigators arrested Christopher Allen Phillips, 30, of Long Beach, on suspicion of arson. He was also charged with attempted murder, since one of the fires was set at an inhabited residence, said Jake Heflin, spokesman for the Long Beach Fire Department.
Heflin said the first fire took place at about 11:55 p.m. Dec. 31 at the 100 block of Pomona Avenue. Two other fires then erupted at La Verne Avenue at 12:11 a.m. and Glendora Avenue at 12:20 a.m. on Jan. 1. The fourth blaze occurred a few hours later near the intersection of Bay Shore Avenue and Ocean Boulevard at 2:55 a.m., Heflin said.
