OU administration, student government react to passage of House Bill 1775

The OU Student Government Association released a statement after the Oklahoma House of Representatives passed House Bill 1775, urging Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt to veto the bill. HB 1775 was originally written as a bill regarding emergency medical situations during high school sporting events. The bill was entirely rewritten into a bill that implements restrictions on certain gender and diversity theories being taught in schools and could hurt the OU community, according to the statement signed by Tavana Farzaneh, SGA president; Crispin South, chair of the Undergraduate Student Congress; Claire Burch, chair of the Graduate Student Senate; and Kobe Chen, chair of Campus Activities Council.

It s unforgettable : OU students, organization leaders reflect on hardships, learning experiences presented by pandemic | News

In March 2020, unlucky Friday the 13th lived up to its reputation when the overhead speakers at Evergreen High School announced cancelations to upcoming athletic events and an extended Spring Break due to a mysterious illness spreading throughout the country. Soon-to-be valedictorian Carson Poupore sat in English class during the announcement, which caused the classroom to go “haywire.” Poupore was oblivious to what was to come due to the unprecedented outbreak. The following August, he enrolled in OU to experience an “unforgettable” freshman year with virtual learning, socially distanced classrooms and masked faces. The class of 2024’s first year of college included online learning and limited in-person events. The pandemic forced virtual settings and different approaches to promote engagement for various student organizations and events — like Camp Crimson, Oklahoma Votes and Campus Activities Council.

Where Title IX ends and gray begins: OU case illustrates how federal guidelines limit screening, handling of previously accused employees

Editor’s note: This story contains mentions of sexual assault.  Despite facing a rape allegation that camp leaders were aware of, an OU student was hired to work at Camp Crimson — a situation one national expert said administrators had limited options in preventing due to privacy laws and Title IX regulations.  Courtney Foster, Norman Women’s Resource Center assistant director, said a freshman orientation setting can be particularly vulnerable for students entering college for the first time, and involving someone even accused of rape can be dangerous due to the nature of the crime. Though the camp has recently been reformatted, she said the extended mentor-mentee relationships between staffers and campers it still boasts add increased risks.
