Van life: Fayetteville-based Open Road Camper Vans provides custom build-outs for life on the road

The appeal of the van as opposed to campers or RVs is mobility, Harris said. “They still have enough room for all your hobbies, all of your gear. All the vans that we build come with a full list of appliances: refrigerator, stove, sink, solar … so you can get all the basics that you would have in an RV in a much smaller, easier-to-maneuver package.”

The VERY unusual new homes of city slickers who now live off the grid

The VERY unusual new homes of city slickers who now live off the grid After a turbulent year, many Americans are dreaming of giving up the grind of modern life to live off the grid. Photographer and filmmaker Foster Huntington has done exactly that, quitting his job in New York City and moving to a multi-level tree house in rural Washington state. The 32-year-old helped design and build the incredible structure - known as the Cinder Cone - which is featured in his new book, Off Grid: Your Ideal Home In The Middle of Nowhere. The tome also includes the stories of dozens of other city-dwellers who have retreated to far-flung locations. Stunning photographs of their shipping containers, boathouses and barns fill the pages of the book.

Nappy nomads: the couples who do #vanlife with babies on board

By the time Huntington made that first #vanlife post, Maxine and Karstan had already finished a 25,000km road trip around Australia. In 2009 after some extended European gallivanting, which included completing the Camino de Santiago in thongs, the couple returned home, bought a 1971 Kombi and set out for the Big Lap, circumnavigating Australia by road. Twelve years, a TV wedding and eight Volkswagens later their adventure continues, and Zuri’s arrival in late 2019 did nothing to dampen the pair’s taste for adventure. After her birth, the couple warmed up with weekend trips. In mid-2020 they set out, with the intention of spending six weeks on the road.
