Just in Time for Foster Youth to host series of EMpower parties for its Annual Walk the Talk fundraiser April 25, 2021 4:08 PM PT Print Just in Time for Foster Youth (JIT), a nonprofit organization dedicated to engaging a caring community to help transition age foster youth achieve self-sufficiency and well-being, will be hosting a series of EMpower parties through the end of May for its dedicated community of supporters. In order to meet county regulations while also meeting the expressed desire for connection and celebration, JIT has scheduled virtual Zoom parties. In addition, in lieu of the originally scheduled annual Walk the Talk fundraiser, Sponsors are hosting smaller, in-person gatherings outdoors with socially-distanced tables. Each party, whether virtual or in-person, will offer an intimate way to engage in the JIT mission while raising awareness and resources for transition age foster youth in San Diego County.

Senate Bill 546 (SB 546), which provides “LifeLine” phones to foster youth, recently passed out of the Senate Human Services Committee with unanimous support. This bill extends the California Public Utilities Commission’s (CPUC) “iFoster Pilot Program,” which currently provides California’s foster youth with smartphones and free voice, text, and data. “The Senate Human Services Committee agreed that now is not the time for the State to take phones away from foster youth,” said Wilk. “Cell phone ownership is often times a lifeline for foster youth during normal times, and the events of last year underscored how important it is to continue the availability of these resources.”

Edwards outlines legislative agenda Gov. John Bel Edwards announced his agenda Thursday for the legislative session that starts Monday, including his support for making kindergarten mandatory for every Louisiana student. The estimated cost of the change to the state’s multibillion education budget is $12 million or less. The proposal is in line with lawmakers’ recent emphasis on early childhood education, though critics believe the mandate infringes on families’ right to make that decision for themselves. Senate Bill 10 by Sen. Cleo Fields, a Baton Rouge Democrat who chairs the Senate Education Committee, would require mandatory kindergarten attendance beginning at age 5.
