Gov. Edwards discussed his legislative priorities in yesterday s press conference and posted on his webpage stating he wants bipartisan legislation focusing on enhancing pay for teachers and support staff, increased investments in higher education, fighting discrimination in auto insurance rates, closing Louisianaâs gender pay gap and mandatory reporting for Title IX violations on college campuses. Gov. Edwards also supports legislative efforts focused on making accommodations for pregnant or postpartum workers, mandating kindergarten and reforming disciplinary procedures for members of law enforcement, along with other measures that include an increase in Louisianaâs minimum wage.Â

Promises2Kids will hold a free virtual San Diego Foster Care Education Summit, Improving the Educational Outcomes for Foster Youth in a Virtual World. Summit guests will learn from foster youth, educators, caregivers, and community members, who will be sharing their experiences of navigating through the education system during the current COVID-19 pandemic. Virtual workshops will also discuss the impact COVID-19 has had on foster youth and their education, creating engaging virtual lesson plans, how you can improve foster youth education, and much more. Track 1 for teachers, administrators, social workers, and CASAs include how to engage in a virtual classroom, trauma-informed teaching, and creating a safe space to talk about race and inequality. Track 2 for caregivers, CASAs, and volunteers will discuss balancing parenting and in-home education for your child, and advocacy and IEPs from the parent perspective.

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UC San Diego presents a virtual open house at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 3. Guests can learn about the membership program for adults older than 50 now completely online via Zoom and twice-daily lectures, seminars and discussions of current events led by UCSD faculty and scholars from across the country. Subjects include medicine, science, international relations, law and society, history, art and humanities, literature and social sciences, with no prerequisites, exams or credit. After seeing the lack of support children often encounter after leaving foster care, Reps. Lindsey Daugherty and Tonya Van Beber are sponsoring HB 21-1094 to create a Foster Youth in Transition Program in Colorado. This program will allow individuals age 18 to 21 who have left foster care to return to foster care if they need continued support.
Daugherty spoke in favor of her bill at Tuesday’s House Public and Behavioral Health and Human Services meeting:
“We have too many young people leaving foster care without the skills and social support networks they need to meet their basic needs. An inability to meet basic needs creates a domino effect of problems: food and housing insecurity, crime, cycle of poverty, unhealthy risk-taking, unplanned pregnancy and a lack of advancement in education or employment.”
