Mother arrested for shooting, killing 2-year-old son, Uintah County officials say

UINTAH COUNTY, Utah â Police have released more information on the
Valerie Peck, 40, has been arrested on suspicion of murdering her 2-year-old son.
After receiving reports Monday afternoon that a young boy and a woman had been shot, Uintah County Sheriff s deputies found Peck seriously wounded from a gunshot, with her son Zack shot dead.
She was taken to a hospital for treatment but was arrested upon her release Tuesday.
The sheriff s office said that during their investigation, they discovered Peck took her son for a drive in the Dry Fork Canyon area. After spending some time in a camping area north of Dry Fork on Red Cloud Loop Road, authorities say she put the boy back in the vehicle and shot him with a .22-caliber rifle before shooting herself.

SALT LAKE CITY After Valerie Peck shot and killed her 2-year-old son, she shot herself twice in an attempt to end her life, according to a police affidavit.
When that didn’t work, she drove to another nearby canyon to possibly “freeze to death,” the affidavit states. Ultimately, deputies found Peck and after a brief stay at a local hospital, she was booked into the Uintah County Jail for investigation of aggravated murder and child abuse. Related
The investigation began on Monday when dispatchers received a 911 call from a person reporting that a woman had shot her 2-year-old son and then attempted suicide by shooting herself, the affidavit states. The Uintah County Sheriff’s Office has not said whether she or someone else contacted them about the shooting.
SALT LAKE CITY A woman was arrested after police say she shot her 2-year-old son, then herself, near Fantasy Canyon in central Uintah County on Monday.
Sheriff s deputies were dispatched on Monday around 2:30 p.m. to the area of Fantasy Canyon after a shooting was reported, officials said. Initial reports indicated it involved a young boy around age 3 and a 40-year-old woman.
Valerie Peck, 40, was identified Tuesday in a statement by Uintah County Chief Deputy Brian Fletcher as the woman involved in the shooting.
Peck took her 2-year-old son, Zack, on a drive Monday morning in Dry Fork Canyon, according to Fletcher. She stopped near a camping area north of Dry Fork on Red Cloud Loop Road.
