YWCA of Central Massachusetts domestic violence Marcia Szymansk

WORCESTER – Citing a sharp increase in the number of people seeking help locally, representatives for regional social services and the District Attorney’s office called on the public to help combat a growing domestic violence problem fueled by the pandemic. According to Deborah Hall, executive director of the YWCA of Central Massachusetts, her organization had seen a 97% increase in domestic violence victims – around 60 to 70 people – reaching out for assistance in the past six weeks, many of whom were in more dire situations than the YWCA would typically see. Similarly, Marcia Szymanski, executive director and CEO of New Hope, said her statewide anti-domestic violence organization has seen a 76% increase in hotline calls and 51% increase in requests for counseling “since things opened up” in the state as the pandemic weakened a few months ago.
