Two people were killed in a 5-alarm house fire in Worcester Friday night, and a third person suffered life-threatening injuries after jumping from the third floor to escape, officials said.
Deputy Fire Chief Martin Dyer confirmed the deaths and injuries, according to Jennifer Mieth, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Fire Services.
The fast-moving fire broke out shortly before 7:30 p.m. at a three-decker home on Jaques Avenue and damaged nearby properties, officials said.
Thick, heavy smoke was visible when fire crews arrived on scene, and a resident was trapped on the third floor, a fire official said.
Two people were found dead on the first floor.
When firefighters arrived, they got inside and did an initial search, but crews were pulled after conditions quickly deteriorated. No firefighters were injured.
The victims were found after the fire was under control.
Everyone else who was thought to have been home made it out safely, fire officials said.
Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early, Jr. on Saturday tweeted that Woodrow Adams, a court officer, and his family had suffered a horrible tragedy in connection with the fire, saying his thoughts and prayers went out to Adams and his family. Early did not elaborate further.
