9 pirate attacks recorded in 18 months

The Business & Financial Times July 13, 2021 GMA pushing for stricter piracy laws Ghana has since 2020 till date, recorded nine pirate attacks in its territorial waters in the Gulf of Guinea, the Ghana Maritime Authority has said. Though the menace is rapidly increasing in West Africa, the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), told the B&FT that these recorded attacks, actually started from other countries and penetrated into Ghana’s exclusive economic zone. The GMA maintains that it is currently pushing for stricter piracy laws and stiffer punishment for culprits. Apart from battling piracy in the form of armed robbery, thefts, drug and arms smuggling and human trafficking on its waters, Ghana is also saddled with illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, which costs the country some US$50 million in losses each year.

Pirates Kidnap Five Seafarers In Tema

  At least five crew members onboard a fishing vessel near Ghana’s harbour city, Tema have been allegedly kidnapped by suspected pirates, top security sources disclosed to Asaase News. The fishing vessel was attacked on Wednesday 19 May 2021 around 6pm, Asaase News can confirm. According to eyewitnesses, the vessel was approached by a skiff with eight persons onboard. Five of the alleged armed pirates then seized the vessel for close to six hours, disembarking with five crew members including the captain, chief officer, second chief officer, chief engineer and boatswain’s mate. “They also stole belongings and valuables of the crew,” a security source told Asaase News.
