It Wasn't Your Typical High School Rivalry Game, But They Played

As I walked into the nearly empty gym at Notre Dame Junior/Senior High School I was wondering what the energy would feel like ahead of one of the biggest rivalries in the Tri-Valley League. I can tell you it was far from ordinary. I immediately recalled from my memory the same game being played a little more than a year ago. It was Notre Dame Men s Varsity Basketball versus Whitesboro s squad and the gym was buzzing with excitement and the constant roar of a crowd made up of parents, classmates and friends. It was a stark contrast to the environment for this evening s rematch.

Robert ‘Bob’ Loften  age 78 of Osakis passed away early Feb. 3, 2021 at the McAllen Medical Center in McAllen, TX. Robert Allen was born on August 11, 1942 in Lakota, North Dakota to Chester and Katherine (Dougherty) Loften. He graduated from Lakota High School with the Class of 1961 having enjoyed participating in several sports during high school. Bob also learned to play percussion and trap drums and was soon playing on weekends with his father’s band. Bob attended Mayville State University in Mayville, ND to become a secondary Math and Science teacher. He married to Kathy Olson in 1962 and they raised five children, Tracie, Tammie, Lynette, Bryan and Nicole. After graduating with his Bachelor degree in 1965, Bob was first hired by the Kensal Public School in Kensal, ND, where he taught for three years. Joyce Ollis Lawing, a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend passed away peacefully on Feb. 1, 2021, surrounded in love by her family. Joyce Lawing was born in Ingalls, NC on Nov. 13, 1936, to the late James Bruce and Zola Elizabeth Ollis. Joyce, one of nine children, was active in Pine Grove Methodist Church in Spruce Pine, graduated from Crossnore High School in 1954 and Appalachian State Teacher’s College in 1958. Joyce made life-long friends and had many interests in college that included being elected to the Student Government and Appalachian’s Chief Cheerleader. While attending college, she met Harold Lawing, who played on the Appalachian Men’s Varsity Basketball team and was “Yosef,” the university’s mascot. They married in June 1958. Joyce and Harold were active in ASU alumni organizations, and at a reunion Joyce would be hoisted up on the shoulders of fearless collegiate cheerleaders during a home football game, when s

NEGAUNEE The Negaunee Elks have announced Students of the Month for December. Nicholas Jacobetti, a senior at Negaunee High School, has been named the Negaunee Elks Student of the Month for December. Nicholas, the son of Duke and Lisa Jacobetti, enjoys practicing sports, listening to music, mountain biking, hiking, lifting weights/workouts, hanging out with friends and family, playing ping-pong, watching and attending NBA and NFL games and volunteering in the community. While attending NHS, Nicholas has received the NHS Sophomore English and Math Department Awards, NHS Junior Science Department Award, West Marquette County Excellence in Education Day – Outstanding Academic Achievement Award, and was named 2020 West-PAC Football Copper Division All Conference 1st Team Honorable Mention – Outside Linebacker.
