There’s no sound quite like the death rattle of a washing machine on its last legs. Which was the dread clatter I heard a couple of weeks ago, as our much-used Bosch began to spin slowly off to the great launderette in the sky. It was then we realised it was only eight years old; too old for its warranty, but too young for farewells. The previous machine, bought after our wedding as a gift from family members, had laundered 17 years’ worth of dirty linen. (Before that my husband had soaked everything in his bathtub like an Edwardian washerwoman, but no wife should live that way.)
