RHS Graduation Planned for June 8

With COVID numbers down, and more and more residents getting vaccinated each day it looks as though this year’s Revere High School (RHS) graduation ceremony will be different than the 2020 RHS graduation. During the height of the pandemic last year, the usual graduation exercises at Harry Della Russo Stadium were cancelled, and graduation for seniors was moved to August. With COVID infections running high at that time the school opted for a ‘drive-by’ graduation in front of City Hall where the Class of 2020 picked up their diplomas during an afternoon-long car parade. At last Tuesday night’s Revere Public School Committee meeting, RHS Principal Dr. John Perella was happy to report that this year’s graduation will return to the stadium with a social distanced ceremony for the more than 500 students who are part of the Class of 2021.

School Committee Discuss March 1 Target Date for Hybrid Learning for Some Students

For nearly an hour last week the Revere Public School Committee debated a motion put forth by some members calling for a hybrid learning start date of March 1 for special education students who are juniors and seniors. The motion, put forth by School Committee members Michael Ferrante, Susan Gravellese, Frederick A. Sannella, Stacey Rizzo, touched off a spirited back and forth over the language of the motion and whether a date should be included.  Members like Revere Public School Superintendent Dr. Dianne Kelly, Carol Ty, Anthony D’Ambrosio and Mayor Brian Arrigo said putting a potential start date out to the public may cause more anger and confusion if the target date doesn’t pan out due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

RPS Wellness Committee Gives Update to School Committee

At the most recent Revere Public School Committee meeting late last month, RPS Athletic Director Frank Shea gave committee members an update on the district’s Wellness Committee. “There are a couple of big rocks that we’re trying to get through this year and the first one is our Wellness Committee policy review,” said Shea. “This was set to be done last year in the spring. However, when COVID struck the state granted us some leniency, and allowed us to take on that work this year. So we are just starting to review our wellness policy which is a 12 page document. It is revised once every three years.”
