Desmond Hansen, commissioned by the
West Seattle Junction Association to paint this box and then to fix vandalism, has repainted it with a new look. Now it’s a portrait of
Dick Gregory, civil-rights activist and humorist, with a quote on the south side, and a fist – originally part of the street-facing side of the box – on its east side:

Bob Henry‘s work restoring the Hi-Yu Parade mural on the south wall at the Junction Post Office:

The beautiful murals around the heart of West Seattle are getting some long-awaited TLC. WS Junction Association president Dave Montoure of West 5 describes it as “the long process of restoring the salvageable murals in The Junction.” As our photos below show, they’re starting with the Hi-Yu Parade mural on the side of the Post Office, hit by taggers some time back. Dave also notes regarding the overall project, “Earl Cruzen, the gentleman who was a key figure in the original murals installation project, has stepped forward yet again he’s a true WS treasure to locate the original mural artists about restoration, replacement and, unfortunately in some cases, disposal.” Read more about the WS murals here and here.
This wasn’t a run of the mill tagger, this was a racist.

Sadly these humans think that they are superior and in all really they are ignorant and shallow. We have awaken drastically, as a society and are continuing to stand for change!! This is the most wonderful part!! How many people believe in love and EQUALITY….

As a person of color I always disliked walking past this mural. Every time I saw it I would think “look at West Seattle celebrating how white it is.” Whelp, guess it wasn’t white enough.
