SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) A division of Ho-Chunk Inc. announced last week it has acquired a set of historic structures on the 1000 block of Sioux City’s Historic Fourth Street from the Aalfs family.
Ho-Chunk Capital’s purchases include the landmark building that housed Aalfs Manufacturing’s corporate offices for much of the 20th century. Built in 1890, the five-story brick-and-stone structure at 1005 Fourth St. has also been known as the Boston Block.
The other buildings acquired house a mix of tenants that include bars, offices, shops and restaurants. Collectively, the structures have 78,527 square feet of floor space, according to a Ho-Chunk press release.

Several track and field alumni from the Pella powerhouse track and field programs finished the indoor season and are transitioning to the outdoor competitions.
Emily Vos, a member of the 2018 Lady Dutch track and field champions and an individual title winner in the 200 meters, placed 6th in the Missouri Valley Conference Championships in the 400 meters and was on the 4×400 team that placed second for the UNI Panthers. Vos has battled several injuries since heading to Cedar Falls, but looks to have a breakout campaign as a junior.
Former Pella boys distance and cross country competitors Nick Bernhagen and Joshua Van Dusseldorp competed at the NAIA National Indoor Championships with the Northwestern College Distance Medley Relay. Van Dusseldorp also competed in the 600 meter race, placing 11th.
A man who is one of only a few local people left still handcrafting fiddles said he is proof that age should be no barrier to learning new skills.
Sean Mac Cearain (68) spent the years before his retirement from teaching in Londonderry collecting tools and creating a workshop so he could dedicate time to his newly acquired skill for making violins.
He began crafting them in earnest 15 years ago, but his interest was sparked after taking part in a basic violin-making demonstration a few years earlier with Comhaltas, an organisation that promotes the Irish language, music and culture.
In spite of his initial lack of skills - or even knowing how to play the instrument - Mr Mac Cearain is now one of only a handful of people here who produce high quality handmade fiddles.
