The Mason City girls basketball team ran into a buzz saw on Tuesday night, as the Mohawks fell to Johnston, 75-42.Â
The Mohawks kept pace with the Dragons early, as Mason City trailed the at the end of the first quarter, 15-10. But over the final three frames, Johnston outscored Mason City, 60-32. We got off to a good start but struggled to make shots consistently and Johnston gradually pulled away, Mason City head coach Curt Klaahsen said. Their balance on offense kept us off balance all night and they will be tough to stop the rest of the season.

Three players did all of the scoring for Mason City, as junior Jada Williams led the way with 19 points on 6-of-15 shooting, with four 3-pointers. Freshman Reggi Spotts had 16 points, and also contributed four 3-pointers, while fellow freshman Grace Berding had the rest of Mason City s 10 points.Â
Monday night in boys basketball on KWAY Country Waverly-Shell Rock beat Marion 51-29. Keaton Farmer led all scorers with 16 points. Marion was the team that knocked W-SR out of the postseason last season. The Go-Hawks are undefeated going into Christmas break.
Monday night on Y99.3 Denver swept Dunkerton. The Cyclone girls won 76-23 and the boys won 85-59.
In other boys basketball: Independence beat Don Bosco 63-37, and Nashua-Plainfield topped North Butler 53-35.
In other girls basketball: Hudson beat Janesville 52-23, Nashua-Plainfield defeated North Butler 53-14 and Waterloo East crushed Marshalltown 56-16.
