Organizations Partner To Memorialize Remaining Unknown 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre Victims
A ceremony to memorialize the victims of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre and honor World War II veteran and massacre survivor Mr. Huges Van Ellis will take place on Monday morning.
The Tulsa Community Remembrance Coalition, in partnership with the Equal Justice Initiative, will honor the remaining unknown victims of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre through its final soil collection, 100 years after the massacre took place.
Over the last two years, the two organizations have worked to honor the history and the lives of Black Wall Street through a series of soil collections. Each collection serves to memorialize the life of a 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre victim. On Monday, the final soil collection event will take place.
Several Downtown Tulsa Roads Closed For Mayfest 2021
Heads up for drivers headed downtown this week, several roads are closed for the next few days while crews set up for this year s Mayfest.
The biggest changes that will impact drivers are detailed below:
North Detroit Avenue is closed from the IDL south to East Archer Street.
Martin Luther King Boulevard will become a two-way street from the IDL to East Archer Street and police will be present to help manage traffic.
North Elgin Avenue is closed from Reconciliation Way to East Archer Street.
West Cameron Street is closed from North Detroit Avenue to North Boston Avenue.
Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade To Take Place With New Safety Measures
The 42nd annual Martin Luther King Jr. parade in Tulsa will happen Monday morning. Some streets in downtown Tulsa will be temporarily closed for the event.
Organizers said there will be no public attendance for the parade because of the COVID-19 pandemic and people are encouraged to watch it online. There will still be floats, but walkers, bands and precision drill teams will not be apart of the parade because of the pandemic.
The parade will start at the intersection of North Detroit Avenue and John Hope Franklin Boulevard. The route will run through the OSU-Tulsa campus and turn onto North Greenwood Avenue.
