The incident happened along the 1500 block of Old Milburnie Road just before 7:30 p.m.
Troopers said a vehicle carrying five people was stopped on the side of the road. Four of the people in the car were standing in the road, as the group tried to fix a flat tire on the vehicle.
Toyona Smith, 17, and another girl were walking south on Old Milburnie Road when another vehicle crashed into them, according to troopers.
Officials with the Highway Patrol said Smith was taken to hospital where she died from her injuries. The other girl had moderate injuries.
North Carolina State Highway Patrol said troopers are now looking for a black Toyota pick-up truck that drove away from the crash site, southbound on Old Milburnie Road.

TRINITY, N.C. A biker was injured in a hit-and-run Thursday night.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the crash happened on Fuller Mill Road near Reddy Foxx Lane in Randolph County around 8:23 p.m.
Troopers said Javier Alexander Estrada-Ochoa,18, of Thomasville N.C was biking north and was struck by a vehicle that was also traveling north.
The vehicle that collided with the bicycle failed to remain at the scene, troopers said.

An 18-year-old Jacksonville, Florida, woman died in an early morning car crash on Interstate 95 Saturday, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Trooper D.J. Brake said this afternoon he has drawn up criminal summonses for the driver of the vehicle, who sustained trauma and is currently hospitalized in Greenville. Another occupant in the 2001 Acura SUV sustained a shoulder injury and possible neck injury.
Brake said the crash occurred shortly before 3:15 a.m. as Angela Vasquez, 21, of Jacksonville, Florida, was driving north near the 168 mile marker about five miles from Roanoke Rapids at a speed unsafe for the rainy and wet conditions. The trooper estimated her speed at the time of the crash was approximately 110 miles per hour.
