The Tranquille upgrades with new restaurants are nice and a welcome sight, but after reading an April edition of Kamloops This Week, I feel uneasy. Firstly, complaints directed toward the homeless camps on the beach I understand frustration from residents on Royal Avenue; however, these people have no place to go. Secondly, I’ve noticed a lot of condominiums rise up over the past five years, but nothing for people struggling with money issues, addictions or diseases who can’t afford these new residences.

Kamloops council briefs

Council has voted to apply for $550,000 under the Local Government Development Approvals Program to develop an electronic applications process related to development applications. The city’s development and engineering services director, Marvin Kwiatkowski, told council his department started some electronic documentation, during the COVID-19 pandemic. He said the printing of large building plans takes time and requires significant storage space. “We do rely heavily on the paper and hard copies, which causes issues,” he said. The Ministry of Municipal Affairs provided $15 million in funding, to be administered by UBCM. Kwiatkowski said the grant covers 100 per cent of eligible costs, which he called “substantial.” The city hopes to focus first on building permits, beginning with a pilot program then working toward full digital.
