City of Crookston - Numbers indicate impact of City clean-up weeks

No one has ever questioned the level of enthusiasm that many Crookston residents have for the City-coordinated Spring and Fall Clean-Up weeks held each year.
But the numbers really hammer that notion home.
Public Works Director Pat Kelly has released the numbers in the wake of 2021’s Spring Clean-Up Week held the last week of April. And keep in mind that Kelly says that a usual City garbage collection effort for a single week totals 4 to 5 tons of garbage collected.
• 149 appliances were picked up.
• 105 tires were picked up.
Spring Clean Up Week in the city was kicked off Thursday with some hands-on garbage picking. Yorkton Mayor Mitch Hippsley, along with Councillors Randy Goulden, Dustin Brears, Quinn Haider and Darcy Zaharia teamed up to pick up garbage at the empty lot east of Walmart and south of the Dodge dealership yesterday. article continues below

With the snow from earlier in the winter long-gone and this week’s snow sure to be a memory soon, added to the fact that the City of Crookston’s Spring Clean-Up Week is fast approaching, it’s the time of the year when property owners feeling especially motivated by warmer temperatures and the grass getting greener give their properties a good once-over.
But not all property owners are overcome with the spirit of spring and the motivation to spruce up their yards, which is where City ordinances involving junk, debris and other items in yards come into play.
