Waxahachie Rotary Club returns with flag season, seeking subscribers

Waxahachie Daily Light Flag season is back with the Rotary Club of Waxahachie, where folks can sign up to be a Rotary Club of Waxahachie flag subscriber. As a subscriber, people will receive an American Flag five times a year. “We’ll put them up five times this year: for Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day / 9/11 and Veterans Day. We try to put them up for like a week at the time. We won’t know exact dates until we get a little bit closer, said Melissa Chapman, flag chairperson. The Rotary Club has been taking part in the program for more than 15 years. It is used as a fundraiser to aid the Rotary and its involvement with programs in the community. 

Waxahachie High School annual plant sale sells out within two hours

Waxahachie Daily Light On Thursday, April 8, the Waxahachie High School Horticulture Program held its annual plant sale, selling out within the first two hours. Originally, the plant sale was supposed to be held through Saturday, but they were unable to continue due to such high demand.  “Usually we do a three-day sale. We sell the same amount of plants every year, and at last, I think the freeze might have played a role in people coming out. People haven’t been out in so long, but they came out in huge numbers to support their kids and they sold out, which is amazing,” shared Jeanette Middleton, the agriculture teacher.

Waxahachie ISD board of trustees to mull budget priorities

Trustees will hold May 3 workshop at superintendent’s request to look at options Waxahachie Daily Light The Waxahachie Independent School District board of trustees considered for the first time budgeting priorities for the 2021-2022 school year with an eye on budgets farther into the future during its regular monthly meeting on Monday night. Superintendent Dr. Bonny Cain said the school district has a large number of worthy areas, but budget realities will force the board to prioritize items. For example, a desire for smaller class sizes takes money from something else, Cain said. Cain presented a list of budget items for the board to prioritize and asked the board to give feedback.

Librarians from Red Oak and Waxahachie share their experiences

Waxahachie Daily Light National Library Week began on April 4 and librarians from Waxahachie and Red Oak shared their love for their jobs and reading when they celebrated National Librarian Day on April 6.  According to the America Library Association, the theme for National Library Week was “Welcome to Your Library,” which promotes the idea that libraries extend far beyond the four walls of a building – and that everyone is welcome to use their services. National Library Day honors library workers that keep the libraries in order and contribute to the enrichment of the communities every day. School librarians  Lead librarian from Waxahachie High School, Megan Mills, has been serving the WISD school district for 25 years of the 34 years she has been in education. She has been a librarian for 32 years.
