LANSING TWP. – A man charged with killing the mother of his two children initially told police she took her own life but later confessed to shooting her in what he characterized as an accident, court documents indicate.
Officers who responded to the Lansing Park Terrace housing complex on Feb. 14 encountered 22-year-old Michael Edward Sczepanski standing with a gun in his hand near where Katelyn Marie Smith lay on the floor in a pool of blood.
Sczepanski knelt next to Smith and yelled, wake up, and why did she do this, a Lansing Township police officer testified during a hearing that resulted in charges being issued against Sczepanski.
