Hundreds of donations collected for migrant children housed in Michigan during border surge Updated May 10, 2021; Facebook Share Michigan residents donated hundreds of toys, clothes and other items to unaccompanied migrant children being housed in the state under a federal program. A donation drive organized by state Rep. Mari Manoogian, D-Birmingham, and Fems for Democracy, a nonprofit political advocacy group, resulted in an outpouring of generosity from residents across the state. Volunteers said they’re trying to make life a little more comfortable for children who traveled thousands of miles without their parents. “These are unaccompanied children sent here to find a better life,” said Gina Keller, a board member with Fems for Democracy. “I would just hope that if I was in their shoes, somebody on the receiving end would show kindness and support to my children.
