Summit girls lacrosse season ends in exciting 8-7 loss to Steamboat

Photo by Ashley Low / Ashley Low Photography The Summit High School varsity girls lacrosse team’s season concluded Saturday, June 5 with an exciting 8-7 loss at Steamboat Springs. The Tigers were able to play a regulation 12-versus-12 game after last time out Thursday only being able to play 10-versus-10 due to too few players. Though it was the team’s eighth loss in eight games during a COVID-19-shortened season, Tigers first-year head coach Samantha Lonsway said it was a beautiful thing the program was able to have a season and finish with a full squad on the field. “This was a difficult season for Summit for all of the teams,” Lonsway said, “but it’s nice that even though we’re having a difficult season we survived and the girls had fun and bonded and made memories, I hope.”

Summit girls lacrosse falls 14-4 to Eagle Valley

Photo by Lucas Herbert / Lucas Herbert Media The Summit High School varsity girls lacrosse team dropped to 0-2 on the season in a 14-4 home loss to Eagle Valley Tuesday, May 11. The Tigers scored four goals on 14 shots in a game where they responded in the second half after the Devils dominated the first half. The Tigers struggled to win possession at the faceoff X, getting shutout at midfield through the first half. The lack of success on the draws enabled the Devils to build a lead with the vast majority of possession. Tigers head coach Samantha Lonsway said the Tigers improved through the game, counterattacking with groundball recoveries. The coach said Summit’s best offense came from saves and clearances starting with senior goaltender Sydney Mullins. Those solid attacks started with the goaltender having the ball and clearing it to the side via passes to her teammates out of the net.
