Flagler County high school wrestlers advance state qualifiers

Andy Mikula, Correspondent    Matanzas’s wrestling team is sending three of its squad to the Class 2A state tournament in Kissimmee after they placed at the Region 1-2A qualifier at Lynn Haven Mosley on Feb. 26 and 27.     Brothers Tyson and Jordan Mills both placed second at the tournament in their weight classes, while Carter Wilder earned a third-place showing. Matanzas took 11th as a team.     Tyson Mills, Matanzas’s 152-pound junior, went up against with Joel Rodriguez of Fletcher in the championship bout and lost a tough 7-4 decision. He was 3-0 headed to the finals, including a second period pin and two decisions.

The service said 4 to 8 inches are possible for the Tahoe Basin with 10 to 18 inches above 7,000 feet and up to 2 feet along the Sierra crest. Strong winds up to 70 mph are expected for the high country.

Flagler high school wrestlers placed at the Cradle Cancer Invitational

Andy Mikula, Correspondent WRESTLING Five Flagler Palm Coast wrestlers placed and the Bulldogs took seventh in team points at the Cradle Cancer Invitational at Jensen Beach on Jan. 8 and 9. Kyle Peacock led the FPC squad with a second-place finish in the 160-pound class. He pinned his first round opponent in 49 seconds and then picked up wins by decision in the next two, including a 3-0 win in the bracket semi-finals. He was defeated 6-2 in the championship match by Riley Orr of Fort Pierce Central. Marcelo Gonzalez was third in the 180-pound class and pinned four of five opponents, including a squash in 39 seconds in the quarterfinals and a 4:54 win to take the third place. Garrick Schwartz (195) was 3-2 including a 4-2 win in overtime sudden victory in the consolation bracket semi-final and Seth Davis (285) was 3-2 with a pin and two decisions. Both upperweights took fourth place. Kole Hannant (113) was fifth, going 3-2 with pins in all three of his victories.

Flagler Palm Coast HS wrestlers place at Danny Byron Invitational

Andy Mikula, Correspondent WRESTLING Flagler Palm Coast upperweight Garrick Schwartz was a champion and nine other Bulldog wrestlers placed at the Danny Byron Invitational Dec. 12 at Kissimmee Osceola. Schwartz, who wrestles at 195, was 3-0 with three pinfalls in the tournament and earned the championship by defeating his wrestling room sparring partner in the round robin final. Dalton Schell placed second and had two wins before being pinned at the 1:47 mark of the head-to-head match by Schwartz. Most of FPC’s wrestlers, including Schwartz and Schell, were entered in the Blue Division of the tournament, which attracted wrestlers from 19 schools, including five from Georgia. FPC also had three Gold and one entry in the White Division.

Andy Mikula, Correspondent WRESTLING Flagler Palm Coast got the new season off to a fast start Dec. 5 winning the 10-team Kenny Pfeifer Invitational at Sebastian River with four weight class champions among more than a dozen place winners. Kyle Peacock (152), Tim King (160), Marcelo Gonzalez (182) and Garrick Schwartz (195) all sported 5-0 records in the round robin format tournament, with Peacock pinning all five of his opponents for 35 team points. King and Schwartz were both had four pins and the unique situation of defeating a teammate in the finals. The Bulldogs had two entrants in three weight classes. Taking second place in their weight classes were Kole Hannatt (113), Brendan Buckles (138), Felipe Costa (160) and Dalton Schell (195) with 4-1 records, and third place ribbons went to Alex Castanheira (106), John Hald (126) and Bryce Dodge (170), also with 4-1 records.
