North Adams Scrapyard Fire Is Out; Ruled As Accident

Mayor Thomas Bernard and Fire Chief Brent Lefebvre held a press briefing Wednesday Morning. Update: The fire was declared out at 10 a.m. on Wednesday almost exactly 24 hours after it was reported Tuesday.  It took dozens of firefighters from as far away as Orange and Northampton to aid in bringing the massive blaze under control. By noon, all units had been released and North Adams firefighters were cleaning up tools and equipment.  As of 10 o clock this morning, we concluded firefighting operations. All known hotspots have been extinguished. We ve turned the property back over to the owners, Apkin, said Fire Chief Brent Lefebvre. Now we re conducting cleanup operations hitting all of our equipment placed back into service and decon from all the dirt and mud and the contamination that were on scene.

State to monitor North Adams air, as residents asked to stay indoors due to junkyard fire

NORTH ADAMS — Firefighters have contained the junkyard fire in North Adams that sent a black plume of smoke shooting into the sky Tuesday morning. City residents were asked to stay indoors for several hours as the fire burned a pile of scrapped cars that sat about two stories high at George Apkin & Sons on State Street. About 40 firefighters fought the blaze around the junkyard and railroad tracks. The city’s advisory was removed by 4 p.m., as firefighters contained the flames and state agencies reported “no significant air quality risks.” At a news conference on Tuesday evening, North Adams Fire Chief Brent Lefebvre said he hoped the firefighting would be able to wrap up Wednesday.

The average property tax bill for Massachusetts homeowners is $6,374 for fiscal 2021, up $197 from the previous year. In some communities, the average tax bill is twice as much. In one community, it’s three times the state average.
