Members of the Ladiesâ Auxiliary of the Beeville Volunteer Fire Department were chauffeured by firefighters to the home of Auxiliary member Lucille Weniger the afternoon of Friday, April 2, for the purpose of presenting Lucille with her well-deserved 65-year service pin.Â
Lucille has served as a significant support to firefighters for more than 70 years, having served five years in the Seguin Auxiliary before relocating to Beeville with her husband and lifelong firefighter, Wallace âWallyâ Weniger in April 1955, when he began his career as a federal firefighter at Chase Field Naval Base and joined the Beeville Fire Department. On Jan. 7, 1956, she joined the Beeville Ladiesâ Auxiliary and has actively served the past 65 years.Â
EDMONTON A long-time member of the Royal Canadian Legion was treated to a surprise birthday drive-by on Sunday. Over an dozen vehicles drove by to wish Lawrence Summers a happy 94th birthday. “I was planning on a quiet evening… because I still have a few more of these (beers) left, so I’m celebrating a wee bit,” said Summers. “I don’t have words to explain how I feel, it’s just excitement, surprise, and it was wonderful.” Among the well-wishers were members of the legion, which Summers has been involved with for around 56 years. “We all love Lawrence, Lawrence is great and with the loss of our veterans it’s important to support them and show them that we all still care,” said Shauna Seip, a member of the Ladies’ Auxiliary and the Jasper Place 255 Royal Canadian Legion.
Reflections: April news from years past
I found some interesting information in past newspapers describing events happening in Morrow County.
For instance, in the Marion-Independent April 11, 1895, there is an item titled “An Interesting Fact,” that declares “Morrow County has a three-tailed calf, so the Sentinel says, and its of the Jersey variety. We suppose it will be carefully cared for and saved as a drawing card for the Morrow County Fair.”
Then the editorial comment, “Why, sure, and it is expected that the editor of the Independent and all other Marion people will be drawn to Mt. Gilead by that same attraction. Do not forget the date Oct. 1-4.”
