Copenhagen 6K raises $3K for global water projects

COPENHAGEN — A 6-kilometer (3.7 miles) walk or run would tire anyone out. That’s the average distance people in developing countries have to walk every day to collect water that is often unsafe to drink. To raise money to help fund water projects, a local World Vision Global 6K for Water was held Saturday, starting at Copenhagen Central School. World Vision is a Christian humanitarian organizaton with a focus on helping children around the world, including the United States. These runs help fund its efforts of providing water to communities that lack easy access to clean water. Copenhagen has been hosting a 6K for five years.

Global 6K for Water planned for Saturday at Copenhagen school

Times staff report COPENHAGEN — More than 800 children under age 5 die every day from drinking dirty water and from poor sanitation due to the lack of water. This community’s fifth 6K run/walk to raise money for water projects in developing countries is trying to help solve that. The local World Vision Global 6K for Water is set for 9 a.m. Saturday starting at Copenhagen Central School. Virtual participants are welcome and can complete their 6Ks when and where they want. A discount on all registration fees expires at the end of today. The distance is 6 kilometers because that is the average distance many people, usually women and children, walk every day to collect water that is often not even safe enough to drink.

A discount on registration fees is valid through Monday. This is a 6-kilometer (3.7 miles) run/walk, and virtual participants are always welcome. Last year’s event included participants from Pennsylvania, Florida, California and Hawaii. The registration fee for adults is $50, which is the average cost to provide lasting clean water to one person. The fee for youth under 18 is $25. To register, visit www.teamworldvision.org/team/copenhagen and click on “Join our team.” For a $15 discount on all registrations until 11:59 p.m. Monday, enter promo code CLEANWATER. Participants each receive a T-shirt, medal and a unique race bib that features the name and photo of a child who will benefit from World Vision water projects.
