February is a short month in what already feels like a long year. But don t let it blow by without digging into its packed schedule (yes, these are snow references) of classical streams. Here s a half-dozen to get you started.
- Met Nightly Opera Streams
The Metropolitan Opera approaches a full year of its popular series of free Met Nightly Opera Streams with a two-week celebration of Black History Month, featuring performances from some of the greatest Black singers to take its stage. On Feb. 5 you can hear Kathleen Battle sing Susanna in Jean-Pierre Ponnelle s 1985 production of Mozart s Le Nozze di Figaro ( The Marriage of Figaro ); on Feb. 6, Battle and Jessye Norman star (as Zerbinetta and Ariadne, respectively) in Bodo Igesz s 1988 production of Strauss s Ariadne auf Naxos ; and on Feb. 7, Shirley Verrett leads Tito Gobbi s 1978 staging

A panel of retired judges chose eight Virginia citizens on Wednesday to make up the un-elected portion of the commonwealth’s new redistricting committee.
The committee was approved when voters approved an amendment to the state constitution in November, and is tasked with drawing new voting districts. It is made up of 16 people: The eight citizens selected today and eight lawmakers appointed by party leadership.
The panel of judges was headed by Pamela Baskervill, a retired Petersburg circuit court judge.
Before starting the selection process, she highlighted the state measures that guide their work, saying, “in making our selections, we are to ensure the citizen commissioners are, as a whole, representative of the racial, ethnic, geographic and gender diversity of the commonwealth.”
