One former educator at the meeting wondered what precedent disciplining Mick would set for the students.
“My concern, and the reason I wanted to come here tonight, was to understand, what did the teacher, and the principal do wrong? What kind of a message are we sending our children? said Jocelyn McMurray, a former Lewisville ISD substitute teacher.
“She worked through the system, she got the kids input, reviewed it, she talked to the principal, the principal approved it,” McMurray later told WFAA.
At end of May, Downing Middle School Principal Curt Martin even offered families the opportunity to get an alternate cover for the yearbook if they wanted it.
The school started getting complaints that those stickers went too far. Some parents were threatening to protest against the school, Neunherz said. I had a friend who felt offended over the whole women s rights, human rights because they are pro-life.
The principal quickly ordered an alternate cover for those who wanted it and Kayla Mick, the teacher in charge of the yearbook, left campus just before the last week of school. We wouldn t see her again and some people had her from 6th grade all the way to their 8th-grade year, Neunherz said. It s really sad not to get to say your final goodbye.
It prompted, per the Morning News, “parent concerns.”
The teacher’s been placed on paid leave.
And Lewisville Independent School District is “reviewing the circumstances surrounding the design of the yearbook before taking further action.”
But for those wondering if Kayla was placed on leave due to parental complaints, LISD spokeswoman Amanda Brim made clear such a statement would be “inaccurate.”
Amanda
did note that teachers are supposed to be “neutral”:
“It is our best hope that all of our teachers connect with students in a way that makes them feel safe and creates a sense of belonging in every classroom. Having said that, we expect staff to remain neutral while engaging students in these conversations, in accordance with district policy.”
