The Twins have won the AL Central in each of the past two seasons, but their chances for running their streak to three in a row have taken some major hits. Not only have they stumbled out of the gate with a 12-20 record, but now they’ve lost Byron Buxton, potentially for several weeks, due to a Grade 2 hip strain. Adding insult to injury, at this writing the team owns the dubious distinction of the largest drop in their Playoff Odds since Opening Day.
The 27-year-old Buxton was injured during Thursday’s 4-3 loss to the Rangers. He pulled up hurt while running out a groundball in the ninth inning, but he may have injured himself before that. In the top of the seventh inning, he crashed into the outfield wall and then tumbled to the ground in an unsuccessful attempt to rob Jonah Heim of a home run:
Minnesota baseball followers in search of depression can start with the best characters the Twins had going for them:
• Byron Buxton was producing and playing center field in such astounding fashion that I was looking up Willie Mays numbers for the 35 games he played for the Minneapolis Millers in 1951. Those were .477 batting average, eight home runs and 30 RBI, meaning Buxton was 100 points shy of Willie, but already had him in homers.
On Tuesday at Target Field, Buxton smacked No. 9 above the bullpen in left center. By Thursday, he was injured again this time, a hip blip that showed up running to first and will miss weeks.

John Means pitched Baltimore’s first no-hitter in 30 years and the organization’s first no-hitter by a lone pitcher since Jim Palmer in 1969, and the Orioles defeated the host Seattle Mariners 6-0 Wednesday afternoon.
Means (4-0) faced 27 batters but was not quite perfect in matching his career-high with 12 strikeouts. Pat Valaika and Trey Mancini homered for Baltimore, which took two of three games in the series.
