South Bend advocates are hopeful but cautious about Biden s immigration reforms

Advocates for immigration reform may feel a sense of relief, but it’s a very guarded one as, on his first day in office Wednesday, President Joe Biden proposed to Congress a sweeping set of changes. So-called Dreamers such as 22-year-old Jose Chiquito Galvan of Goshen, who are protected by DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, would get green cards — as would farm workers and people with temporary protected status. And an eight-year path to citizenship, including background checks, would open up for the estimated 11 million people in the United States without legal status. “For those who’ve been involved in immigration advocacy work in two or three (presidential) administrations, we’re used to getting promises and there being shortcomings,” Chiquito Galvan said. “The road has been long and arduous.”

Elkhart schools to ask voters for property tax hike to bring in $15 million per year

ELKHART — Those involved in the effort to pass a property tax hike for Elkhart Community Schools know that it isn’t the best time to ask residents to volunteer to pay more. In the midst of the pandemic, many people are out of work or underemployed — even in the greater Elkhart area, which has rebounded rapidly from the coronavirus-induced recession, thanks largely to a surge in demand for RVs, boats and other products made in the area. Though RV companies and their suppliers are doing well, the pandemic is still having an enormous impact on restaurants, hotels and other small businesses — some of which have closed over the past several months, said LeVon Johnson, president and CEO of the Greater Elkhart Chamber of Commerce.
