Man remaining in custody until bail hearing Poll Yes A 29-year-old man facing several criminal charges following a police standoff in Lundbreck last October remains in custody while he waits to have a bail hearing. Shaine William Smith, who is in custody at the Lethbridge Correctional Centre, was represented by Calgary lawyer Robin McIntyre during a brief hearing Tuesday in Lethbridge provincial court. The matter was simply adjourned, however, until Jan. 19 to allow the accused time to retain his lawyer. Smith was charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, drug possession, resist/obstruct a peace officer, possession of stolen property and possession of break-in instruments.

Yes Only one of five men arrested in September relating to break-ins around southern Alberta still faces criminal charges. Dustyn McCracken of Taber, who is in custody at the Lethbridge Correctional Centre, is the only suspect still facing numerous charges, including possession of stolen property, trafficking stolen property and theft of a motor vehicle. McCracken’s matters were in Lethbridge provincial court last week, where his lawyer pointed out the accused intends to apply to Lethbridge’s new drug treatment court. The case is scheduled to return to court today to speak to the charges and receive a progress report.

COVID-19 cases rise to 242 at Calgary Remand Centre

The facility is currently dealing with a large coronavirus outbreak.(Jeff McIntosh/The Canadian Press) A COVID-19 outbreak at the Calgary Remand Centre has ballooned this week to 234 active cases  including inmates and staff but facility and health representatives say they are handling the situation according to protocol. That includes quarantining new inmates and isolating those who test positive. As of Friday, 198 inmates, 35 correctional staff members not including Alberta Health Services staff and one contractor have tested positive at the remand centre. This is up from the 41 cases reported at the end of November.

Trials set for man facing several violent offences Poll Yes A Lethbridge man accused of committing a string of violent offences more than a year ago, is finally set to stand trial, but not for several more months. Cory Ray Williams, who previously elected to be tried by a provincial court judge, is scheduled to stand trial for five days beginning May 10, 2021, his lawyer confirmed Wednesday in Lethbridge provincial court. On Nov. 4 Calgary lawyer Andre Ouellette, Williams’ third lawyer, pleaded not guilty on behalf of his client to charges of kidnapping, attempted kidnapping, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, assault with a weapon, flight from police, dangerous driving, uttering threats, robbery, attempted robbery, housebreaking and failure to comply with probation.
