THERE are mixed messages about how Ledbury s food retailers are faring in these lockdown times. Photographs are flooding into Ledbury Food Group from people who took part in the recent online Ledbury Big Breakfast event. But the Food Group is concerned that Ledbury Country Market, which is still operating during lockdown, is not attracting similar strong support from the public. A Food Group spokesperson said: Many thanks to everyone who took part in this year’s Big Breakfast at Home, and by doing so supported our local food retailers and in turn our local food producers. We’ve heard from people who took the plunge and treated themselves to something different from normal to start the day – and enjoyed doing so. We’ve seen the smiles from happy retailers and butchers for a good week’s trade.
The annual Ledbury Big Breakfast starts from today until Monday - but with a slightly different recipe for success this year. The event usually takes place in cafes, pubs and hotels in the town, showcasing the best of local produce, but these venues are now closed during the third lockdown. Participants are being asked to visit local shops and create their own breakfast at home. Griff Holliday from the Ledbury Food Group which is organising the event, said: “We want to encourage everyone to support local butchers and greengrocers. This is the first time it s been held with social isolation rules in place and I want to remind people to observe Government requirements when out shopping and at home.
