The portable device acts as a mini generator that produces light using ionization by filling it with 500 milliliters of seawater, the salt in the water reacts with magnesium and copper plates inside the device, converting it into electrical energy.
The device emits up to 45 days of light and can also be used to charge a mobile phone or another small electrical device via a USB port.

The WaterLight was created as part of a collaboration between E-Dina and creative agency Wunderman Thompson, which saw that locals in rural parts of Colombia specifically, the indigenous Wayúu tribe were struggling to keep the lights on at night.

refined prototypes of the six finalists of the Lexus Design
Award 2021 global competition, including the Kiwi team
‘Heartfelt’ composed of two AUT
students.
Jessica Vea and Gayle Lee – the
young, local designers behind the nominated concept
Heartfelt – have been chosen from an international
pool of 2,079 submissions from 66 countries for their
creative, relevant and empathetic design concept. At a time
when physical human connection is at a historical low,
Heartfelt is a product designed to strengthen
relational bonds and decrease feelings of loneliness amongst
people in self-isolation.

Lexus Design Awards India (LDAI): What is it? LDAI is the India edition of the international design competition started by Lexus in 2013. The competition targets upcoming designers with the aim of encouraging growth and furthering the cause of design helping society. It thus rewards designers and creators who have original and innovative solutions to issues faced in each country.
One is a “Solar Desalination Skylight” created by Denmark-based Henry Glogau.
The innovation uses seawater to emit natural diffused light, to make drinking water, and to produce energy from leftover salt.
Glogau is a New Zealander who recently graduated from the Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The other is “Terracotta Valley Wind”, created by Intsui Design, a design group based in Tokyo, consisting of Chenkai Guo, Baohua Sheng, Yilei Lyu, Yu Zhang, all of whom are pursuing Masters degrees at Tama Art University’s Integrated Design department.
The terracotta evaporative cooling system is for subway stations, using the wind created by trains.
