Smarties has become the first global confectionery brand to switch to recyclable paper packaging.
A virtual media roundtable briefing held earlier this week heard that Smarties will transfer 90% of its range to the new packaging format (10% already uses recyclable paper packaging). The move to paper will replace around 250 million plastic packs, equating to over 400 metric tons of plastic packaging.
Louise Barrett, Head of the Nestlé Confectionery Product Technology Centre in York, England, said: “The new packaging has been extensively tested by Nestlé packaging experts to make sure it keeps the Smarties product in prime condition during transport and storage. We also made a number of modifications to our existing manufacturing lines so that we can wrap the products without tearing or puncturing the paper.”

Louise Barrett, head of the Nestlé Confectionery Product Technology Centre in Haxby Road, said developing safe and convenient paper-based solutions for Smarties had required the pioneering of new materials and testing by Nestlé packaging experts at the centre and at the Swiss-based Institute of Packaging Sciences.
