Gov Edwards Supports Bills in Legislature Strengthening Title IX Requirements

In his press conference on Thursday, April 22, 2021, Gov. John Bel Edwards announced that House Bill 409 has been approved by the House Education Committee and Senate Bills 230 and 232 have been approved by the Senate Education Committee. These three bills all address the Title IX issues on college campuses and work to ensure reporting and accountability are handled in a timely manner. Senate Bill 10 has been approved by the Senate Education Committee. This is the bill that would make Kindergarten mandatory across the state. Both of these issues are part of the Governor s Legislative Agenda.  In relation to COVID-19, there were 615 new cases today across the state out of 22,705 tests. 334 residents are hospitalized with 41 on mechanical ventilators.

(WAFB) - Enrollment is down at community colleges around the country due to the pandemic and the data is clear. A recent study by the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center showed that enrollment is down 9.5% from a year ago. In Louisiana, 11 out of the 12 colleges in the Louisiana Community and Technical College System have seen a drop in numbers. “Can you imagine going through this crisis for six to seven months?” asked Dr. Willie Smith. “People need to work and some folks lost their jobs and couldn’t afford to pay their tuition.”
