Louisiana Congressman Troy Carter pledged to serve with honor and integrity after he was officially sworn into office Tuesday.
Carter, a New Orleanian who won a special election to replace former District 2 U.S. Rep. Cedric Richmond, is Louisiana s only Democratic member of Congress. Carter left the state Senate for the promotion to Congress. I will serve our district with every fiber of my being to ensure everyone has the chance to fulfill their hopes and dreams, he said after taking the oath from Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. There s a lot of hard work ahead. Our district and the entire country need Congress to prioritize COVID relief, economic recovery, criminal justice reform and environmental justice. Now is the time for us to work together to put our country first.
Boudreaux selected as Democratic Caucus Chair

Lafayette s Gerald Boudreaux has been selected to lead the Louisiana Senate s Democratic Caucus.
Boudreaux, D-Lafayette, replaces Troy Carter, who recently was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Carter said Boudreaux was selected as his replacement because of his lifelong career in public service and steadfast dedication to the betterment of the Louisiana Democratic Party.
We caught up with Boudreaux today, and he said he was honored by the selection. I think my mission is to bring some unity, and continue to work collaboratively with all members of the Senate, be they Democrats or Republicans, because at the end of the day, we cannot get anything done without the work across party lines, Boudreaux said. He said the key is to continue dialogue. We respect the views of others, and give others the opportunity to understand our position.
Lafayette Senator New Chair of Senate Democratic Caucus
Lafayette State Senator Gerald Boudreaux has been elected as the new Louisiana State Senate Democratic Caucus.
Boudreaux, who represents parts of Lafayette, St. Landry and St. Martin Parishes, will be taking the place of Troy Carter. Carter recently won a special election to the District 2 2 Congressional seat representing Louisiana.
Boudreaux says he is very humbled to be chosen to fill this important seat. He adds,
I will strive to ensure our members have the tools they need to succeed in pushing our priorities forward while working towards consensus across party lines for the betterment of our state and our communities.

His suggestion was immediately dismissed by fellow GOP state Rep. Stephanie Hilferty.
Garofalo backs legislation that would prevent teaching that the US or Louisiana is systematically racist or sexist.
GOP state Rep. Ray Garofalo of Louisiana on Tuesday said that public schools and colleges should teach the good of slavery during discussions about race, as part of a bill that he proposed that would bar divisive concepts from classrooms.
Garofalo, who chairs the House Education Committee, said during a hearing on the bill, also known as HB 564, that his legislation sought to remove politics out of the classroom and cultivate a learning environment free of discrimination.
