Southend crime: Crackdown on 'out of control' gang violence

THE latest stabbings in Southend saw a dispersal order almost the size of the town itself put in place. The attack on two teenagers in Beach Road on Monday night last week saw a massive response from police, covering Station Road in Westcliff and up to Southchurch. The zone for extra stop and search powers extended to many parts of the borough. The huge incident raised concerns that gang crime in Southend was “out of control” – right in the middle of Anti-Social Behaviour Week, a national campaign to raise awareness of the issue. But assistant chief constable of Essex Police, Andy Prophet, said dispersal orders were a key tool for short term intervention.

South Essex knife crime: Campaigners welcome court orders

The orders can be in place for a maximum of two years and must be reviewed by the courts after 12 months, with orders issued to under-18s to be reviewed more regularly. The courts can also call for a range of activities to take place such as educational courses, sports club referrals, relationship counselling, anger management, mentoring and drug rehabilitation under the orders. Breaching the order will be a criminal offence, punishable by a maximum prison sentence of two years if convicted. It comes after a number of knife attacks including killings in Southend and south Essex. Luke Bellfield, 18, from Rayleigh was murdered in a knife attack near the Peterboat in Old Leigh on February 25.

How police will keep Southend safe this summer

He said: “As a minimum it’s my intention that we have an additional 46 officers on duty across the weekends. “That won’t all be at one time, in the peak hours I’m hoping we will have between 20 and 40 officers, depending on the weekend and the football, that are able to be visible in Old Leigh and Marine Parade in particular and Chalkwell up to Thorpe Bay. “If you land in an area that is a hot spot for the space of 15 minutes, you have a suppressive effect for the next 24 hours. “In areas such as Southend seafront, that may be less time so we will be there more frequently.
