Shadow health secretary Jonathan Ashworth has pledged to use upcoming NHS legislation and votes in Parliament to demand Government action for those on hospital waiting lists.
According to data from NHS England, the number of patients waiting more than 52 weeks to start their hospital treatment stood at 387,885 in February 2021 – the highest number for any calendar month since December 2007.
A year ago, in February 2020, the number of people having to wait more than 52 weeks to start treatment stood at just 1,613.
Health workers have faced enormous pressures throughout the coronavirus crisis, which have pushed up hospital waiting times.

Dr Richard Vautrey
Dr Vautrey told the YEP: This is a sign of the massive impact the pandemic has had on the wider NHS. Staff at GP surgeries and hospitals have prioritised the huge number of patients coping with Covid-19. This has clearly left a number of other patients in this situation. It concerns clinicians at much as patients. We want to provide the best possible service to our patients and it is really frustrating to see these sort of delays.
The report stated that, before the Covid-19 pandemic, the NHS in Leeds had made “positive steps” to improve the speed of access to treatment and to the quality of its healthcare, listing better treatment times and shorter treatment waiting lists.
