22-0 committee vote for Iowa House GOP s tax plan

22-0 committee vote for Iowa House GOP’s tax plan Democrats on a House committee joined Republicans in voting for the House GOP’s latest tax plan. It includes more than two dozen tax changes, but notably does not include using state tax dollars rather than county property taxes to support Iowa’s mental health system. Representative Chuck Isenhart of Dubuque, a Democrat, agreed. “I understand that the Senate bill proposes to make what many could consider potentially radical changes to how we deliver mental health in this state based on who pays for it,” Isenhart said today, “and I agree with Speaker Grassley that we have not really considered all the ramifications.”

Fuel retailers, farmers find no compromise on biofuels bill | News, Sports, Jobs

IOWA CAPITAL DISPATCH Fuel retailers and trucking groups criticized the latest version of a proposal to set state biofuel standards, clashing during a Thursday morning meeting with agriculture groups that support the bill. “This bill, as written, is detrimental to the retail industry and consumers at large,” said Jason McDermott, owner of several Iowa convenience stores and the McDermott Oil Company. Lawmakers plan to amend Senate File 549 to match a proposal in the House by Rep. Lee Hein, R-Monticello. Iowa is the nation’s top provider of both corn and ethanol, but much of Iowa’s ethanol is sold out of state. Mindy Larsen-Poldberg, director of government relations for the Iowa Corn Growers Association, said the group “enthusiastically and wholeheartedly” supported the bill.
