Darlington school gets global village playground

CHILDREN have had the chance to explore their new global village playground following a community project. Volunteers spent the last week of the school term building a new playground at Corporation Road School in Darlington. Headteacher Ann Pringleton said: It s even better than I thought it would be. It s absolutely amazing. It s a huge legacy for the community because it does belong to the community. We ve got a global village and it doesn t get any better than that. The playground, which has been in planning for three months, was inspired by the school s diversity and features structures based on well-known buildings from across the world.

It s Global Road Safety Week and the Steve Biko Centre for Bioethics conducted research on the assumptions about road safety especially when it comes to minibus taxi crashes, and who is responsible. Occupational therapist and bioethicist at the University of Witwatersrand Dr Lee Randal says the interest behind this study was based on the issues surround preventable incidents in South African roads. What piqued my interest in the minibus taxi sector was first my experience as an occupational therapist and working with injured taxi drivers and hearing their inner perspectives on the industry and the dynamics between them and other users in particular private vehicle drivers.

Taxi drivers reckless driving caused by poor working conditions, study shows

Supplied by ER24 A research study done by an occupational therapist at the University of Witwatersrand has revealed that poor working conditions contribute to the number of minibus taxi crashes on the roads. The study was done after a  minibus taxi driver lost his arm when a private vehicle hit him in 2010. As a solution to the crashes, Dr Lee Randall looked to the Vision Zero philosophy, which originated in Sweden in the 1990s and is premised on the view that no loss of life is ethically acceptable.
