Iowa City leaders on campus and in government reacted to the Derek Chauvin guilty verdict Tuesday, saying that although justice was served in this case, there’s still a need for continued action.
The Daily Iowan reports that Mayor Bruce Teague opened last night’s City Council meeting by supporting the verdict and citing moves the Council has made regarding police reform in the city.
Teague added that the people of Iowa City expect better, and Iowa City Police expect better of themselves in comparison to some other cities around the country.
Mohammad Traore of the city’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission told the Daily Iowan that the verdict shows the need for pushing local governments and institutions to make changes. He added that while people consider the verdict justice, he didn’t feel that way. He’s quoted in the interview as saying, “I don’t see equality and fairness in George Floyd not being with his family and not being with his community.”
The four candidates to replace University of Iowa President Bruce Harreld will be revealed, and interviewed, in the next two weeks.
The separate question-and-answer sessions with the university start with the initial finalist at 3:30 p.m. Monday. Other finalists will speak at that time on April 15, 19 and 22. The identities of the finalists will be released at 8 a.m. the day before the interview. The nine members of Iowa s Board of Regents are expected to select the 22nd Iowa president at a meeting on April 30.
The public forums will be live-streamed and available for viewing at IowaRegents.edu and PresidentialSearch.uiowa.edu.

IOWA CITY Without conducting a formal search despite earlier suggestions it would the University of Iowa on Friday named another interim administrator to assume a top leadership post on campus: dean of its largest college.
Sara Sanders stepped in as interim dean of the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in July after its former and short-lived dean Steve Goddard abruptly resigned just a year into the job following a contentious Zoom town hall about budget cuts and fall return plans with 400-plus faculty and staff.
Sanders a social work professor who before her interim appointment served as associate dean for strategic initiatives and director of the college’s diversity, equity, and inclusion division will earn an annual salary of $375,000, up from her interim pay of $305,000 and previous $160,980 salary.
